South Sudan Kiirdom

As South Sudan’s only president since independence, Salva Kiir has long ruled one of the world’s most corrupt countries—corruption being a root cause of the ongoing conflict and lack of development that plague the nation. And while Kiir publicly denounces corruption,^{[202] [203] [204]} his family has amassed an extensive network of companies in some of the most lucrative sectors of the South Sudanese economy. In order to provide greater transparency into Kiir and his family’s corporate holdings, The Sentry has mapped 126 companies owned by Kiir’s family, based on corporate documents from the South Sudan Ministry of Justice. Insights into this network reveal key indicators of possible corruption that justify enhanced scrutiny by the South Sudanese people, financial institutions, and foreign governments.
